Poem

I wonder if I will always note that this was the date

upon which my friend died now two years ago.

The moon was full that night, there was no drought

and it was certainly not as hot then as it is now.

I saw a colleague of hers the other day

who said he’d thought of her recently.

I think of her every day,

I said and he looked rather startled.

Words and phrases that passed

from her everyday language into

mine and mine to hers I suppose

that is the biggest culprit as we

were both always keen on words.

I noted in my journal that in those last days

out of her head and drugged with morphine

the word poem popped into her ramblings

again and again not so surprising as she

was likely writing one in her head even then.

Odd Characters

Skull and crossbones leer at me

from Pamela’s scarf once again the just so thing

for I shall be a pirate come Sunday.

She had a penchant for ghosts, zombies,

and all that makes the heart race.

But I prefer a bittersweet story, one with lovely odd characters,

affairs of the heart, a dog, perhaps a bear, ships at sea and

lighthouses that reliably bring All in to shore.

My Moody Friend

She could be harsh sometimes cruel

like the character in the book we discussed

in book club, negative ugly judging.

But she had extraordinary qualities too

a capacity for loving and accepting

the quirks of those she loved that

far outstripped my own

the playfulness of a child

a consummate sense of humor

a genius for voices accents mimicry

incredible talent with words.

Slammed the phone down in

my ear more times than I can number

and yet I counted myself lucky

to say she was my friend.

Two Years Ago

Two years ago this day I brought
my handsome silverblack dog home
to start a life with me and here
he lies curled up beside me
beautiful young chap whose name
(given by my friend who died
five months later my friend whose
need led me to him) suits his
personality to a T.  Imminently
imperturbable eager to please
pleasantly eager loving friendly
sweet-tempered mild-mannered
Miles.
